Living Your Faith At Home – The First Week of Advent
The Catholic Advent wreath features four candles, each representing one of the four Sundays of Advent and symbolizing hope, peace, joy, and love. Each Sunday, a new candle is lit, gradually increasing the light as Christmas approaches.
The four candles have a special name and meaning. Each time you light the first candle during the week of Advent starting on December 1, a corresponding Bible verse and prayer can be said.
The Prophecy Candle represents HOPE (purple candle). It reminds us of the hope we have in God and the promise of Jesus coming to save us. The color purple is special during Advent as it reminds us to prepare, make sacrifices, and think about Jesus’ coming
A message for the week: This week, we remember how prophets long ago told people about Jesus’ coming. They gave everyone hope!
Bible verse: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” – Isaiah 9:2
Prayer: Dear Jesus, as we light this candle, help us slow down and think about what is most important. Let your light bring joy to our hearts. Bless our family and friends, and help us care for those in need. Amen.
