The Bread of Life

Emma loved helping her grandmother bake bread. Every Saturday morning, they mixed flour, water, and yeast together. Then they waited for the dough to rise.

One Saturday, Emma asked, “Grandma, why do we make bread every week?”

Grandma smiled. “Because bread helps keep our bodies strong. It gives us energy to learn, play, and work.”

Emma nodded. She loved warm bread fresh from the oven.

The next day at church, Emma listened carefully to the Gospel. She heard Jesus say, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven.”

Emma was confused. After Mass, she asked her grandmother, “How can Jesus be bread?”

Grandma sat beside her. “Jesus wasn’t talking about ordinary bread. He was talking about the Eucharist.”

“The Eucharist?” Emma asked.

“Yes,” Grandma said. “At Mass, the bread becomes Jesus Himself. When we receive Holy Communion, Jesus comes into our bodies and our hearts.”

Emma thought about that. “So, Jesus feeds our souls?”

“Exactly,” Grandma replied. “Just as regular bread helps our bodies, Jesus helps our souls. He gives us strength to love, forgive, and follow Him.”

That week, Emma tried to remember Jesus whenever she felt upset. When her little brother knocked over her block tower, she wanted to yell.

Then she remembered what Grandma had said.

“Jesus, help me,” she whispered.

Instead of yelling, she took a deep breath and then helped her brother rebuild the tower.

That evening, Emma told Grandma what happened.

Grandma smiled. “That is what Jesus does. When He is in our hearts, He helps us become more loving like God.”

The next Sunday, Emma looked at the Eucharist differently. She knew it was much more than bread.

It was Jesus, the Living Bread from Heaven.

As she prayed quietly, Emma thanked Jesus for feeding her soul and helping her grow closer to Him every day.

Moral: Jesus gives us the Eucharist to strengthen our souls and help us live as His followers.
