The Greatest Treasure
One sunny day a girl named Grace
Went for a walk at a gentle pace.
She hummed a happy little tune
Beneath the warm bright afternoon.
She saw a garden, green and wide,
With flowers blooming side by side.
She helped pull weeds beside a tree,
Then whispered, “What could this be?”
Her little hands uncovered there
An old treasure chest with care.
She brushed away the dirt to see
A hidden box beneath the tree!
Inside were rubies, gold, and pearls,
Bright enough to make heads whirl.
She smiled and said, “What could be more
Than all this treasure I adore?”
Her grandpa softly shook his head.
Then this is what he gently said:
“These jewels are bright, it’s surely true,
But there’s a greater prize for you.
God’s Kingdom is the greatest treasure.
His love brings everlasting pleasure.
No gold can buy, no pearl can earn,
The gift for which our hearts all yearn.”
Grace thought hard as they walked on,
Until they reached a quiet pond.
Some fishermen stood by the shore,
Sorting fish from less to more.
The good ones filled each waiting net.
The others weren’t the right ones yet.
“Why sort them now?” young Grace inquired.
Her grandpa answered with a smile:
“One day we’ll stand before our King.
Our loving choices matter.
Each time we choose what’s good and right,
Our hearts grow full of heaven’s light.
When we tell truth instead of lies,
Or help a friend who’s sad and cries;
When we forgive and gladly share,
Or whisper simple, trusting prayer;
We show that Jesus is most dear.”
That afternoon back home they played.
A tower tall of blocks was made.
Her brother bumped it with his knee.
It crashed! Grace frowned unhappily.
Then Grandpa’s words came back once more:
“Choose heaven’s treasure over more.”
She took a breath and smiled instead.
“Let’s build again,” was all she said.
Her brother grinned from ear to ear.
Kind love had chased away the fear.
That night beneath the starlit sky,
Grace prayed to God with thankful sigh:
“No sparkling jewels could ever be
A greater gift You’ve given me.
Each day I choose Your loving way,
You help me grow in love each day.
And when my life on earth is through,
The greatest treasure will be You.”
Moral: Every day we choose between right and wrong. When we choose to love Jesus and do what is right, we are choosing the greatest treasure of all: life with God forever in heaven.
